Become a Volunteer Driver

Wanderbus and our community rely on having a strong team of dedicated volunteers to drive our minibuses. We are always looking for more people to join our team and those interested in volunteering for Wanderbus will be warmly welcomed.

Why Drive for Wanderbus?

Flexible Schedules

Drive regular weekday routes, occasional weekend private hires, or monthly day trips to suit your availability.

Full Training & Assessment

Full training and an accompanied assessment before you take passengers, with refresher checks every two years.

Make a Local Difference

Provide a lifeline for elderly and non-driving residents who rely on our buses for independence and social connection.

Who can Volunteer?

To be a driver you need:

  • to hold a full UK driving licence (ideally clean but talk to us if you have any endorsements)
  • to have D1 entitlement on your driving licence
  • to have held your licence for two years or more, and
  • to be aged 30 or over, which is a requirement of our insurers.

If you’re 70 or over and would like to drive, please still get in touch. We look at each application individually with our insurers, who make the final decision.

In return we offer:

  • flexible volunteering, with a level of commitment to suit your lifestyle
  • the opportunity to work with a not-for-profit organisation that offers a much-needed service
  • training to a nationally recognised standard and accompanied by one of our experienced drivers until you are ready to ‘go solo’.
  • an opportunity to learn new skills
  • something worthwhile to do in your spare time
  • work in a friendly, supportive environment
  • the opportunity to meet new people, and make a positive difference to their lives.

As well as providing a public transport service for otherwise poorly served villages, you will be helping community groups across Bedfordshire and nearby counties to carry out their day-to-day activities. This will include shopping, afternoon tea, lunches and many other social activities. Many of these community groups wouldn’t be able to operate without our central pool of volunteer drivers.

Trips and hours vary, but most run on weekday mornings and early afternoons, with between two and four hours of free time at the destination depending on the route.

Currently we are seeking reserve drivers to cover holidays, sickness and so on, so we’re bound to have opportunities available which would suit you.

You may want to volunteer just one day a month, or you may be looking to drive on a much more regular basis and we will try to fit you in to suit.
